In last month’s issue, I told you that cancer cells live on glucose (sugar). Every time you eat sugar and carbohydrates, it will shift your metabolism away from burning fat so it can burn the carbohydrate calories you just ate. Eating too many high-glycemic carbs on a daily basis is one way to make sure that your body will eventually make this shift permanent.
When your body shifts to a glucose-burning metabolism, it gives cancer an almost endless supply of food. So the key to preventing cancer is to stop that shift from a fat-burning metabolism to a glucose-burning metabolism.
Fortunately, it’s possible to shift your body back to a fat-burning metabolism. So even if you already have cancer, it’s possible to create a much healthier environment to fight it. In fact, the Shultz study I told you about last month proved this. When the researchers took mice with cancer and shifted their metabolism from a glucose-burning metabolism into a fat-burning metabolism, it actually changed the behavior of the cancer cells! The cells became less malignant and they stopped spreading.
As amazing as this is, it is totally in line with other research that’s been done on cancer and glucose. For example, it’s well documented that people with diabetes have a much higher incidence of cancer.
It’s also well-documented that people with high blood sugar have a higher incidence of cancer.
And there’s even evidence that eating a diet high in carbohydrates can help promote cancer. Researchers proved this several years ago in a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
In this study, the researchers exposed rats to a breast-cancer-causing agent. Then they fed one group of rats a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet and another group a low-fat, high-carb diet. Result: 43% of the rats on the low-fat, high-carb diet developed cancer. But only 7% of the rats on the high-fat diet did — and this is despite the fact that the researchers exposed them to a powerful cancer-causing agent.
This is further proof that if you want to prevent cancer, keep your body from shifting to a glucose-burning metabolism. And if you already have cancer, for the best possible results, make sure that your cells are primarily burning fat instead of glucose.
But how do you do it?
